Village of Bazna is located just outside of Medias,
one of the most charming small towns in southen Transylvania.
Bazna was settled in year 1302 and - a little over 500 years later - in 1842
was recognized as a spa destination. Bazna's natural curative resources include
an unique combination of therapeutic mud and mineral waters,
which produce excellent results in the treatment of rheumatic and nervous system afflictions.
Another curative element is the salt extracted from the nearby saltu lake: Bazna salt, rich in iodine and bromine.

Like many other towns in Transylvania, Medias, was strongly fortified during the Middle Ages.
Town's 33 craft guilds built, maintained and defended the bastions of the walled city against invading forces.
St. Margaret church represents the core around which the citadel gradually developed.
The center of Medias still maintains a medieval feel with narrow winding lanes,
centuries-old houses and a large pedestrian square surrounded by colorful facades.

Valea Viilor Fortified Church
Location: 15 miles south of Bazna
Access: car
Located in village Valea Viilor (Vineyards Valley),
this fortified church was built in 1263 in gothic style and enlarged and strengthened in the 15th and 16th centuries.
26-feet-tall and five-feet-wide defending walls still protect the church.
Saxon furniture, dating from the 16th century, is on display in the church.

Tarnave wine region, in Transylvania, is one of Romania's main producers of white wine.
Cool climate of the region is ideal for fruity white grapes with a very good acidity.
The area has a long tradition of producing excellent dry and medium-dry wines such as
Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Traminer.
Although traditional tools have been replaced by modern winepresses and state of the art technology,
grape picking, control of fermentation, storage and maturation of wine
are all carried out according to a set of rules handed down from generation to generation.
Wine and champagne tasting is offered at the 16th century Bethlen-Haller Castle.
Biertan Fortified Church
Where: 22 miles south east of Bazna

In the nearby countryside, 13th century Biertan, a UNESCO World Heritage town, stands high on a hill, enclosed by walls more than 35 feet high.
The most famous of the fortified churches, Biertan was the seat of the Lutheran bishops from 1527 to 1867.

Sighisoara Citadel - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Transylvania is home to the exquisite medieval town of Sighisoara,
a perfectly intact 15th century gem with nine towers, narrow passageways and cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes),
ruler of Walachia from 1456 to 1462. It was Vlad who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation, Count Dracula.
The house in which the Vlad Tepes was born is just one of many attractions here.
Other include: Church on the Hill, with remarkable 500-year-old frescoes,
Church of the Dominican Monastery, known for its Transylvanian Renaissance carved altarpiece,
baroque painted pulpit, Oriental carpets and 17th century organ
and the Venetian House, built in the 13th century.
In the nearby countryside, another UNESCO World Heritage town, 13th century Biertan Fortress,
stands high on a hill as one of the largest and most impressive medieval strongholds in Transylvania.

Saschiz Fortified Church - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Where: 40 miles east of Bazna

The Evangelical Church of Saschiz - built between 1493 and 1496 by Saxon colonists -
is an impressive structure noted for its sheer size and the way the fortifying elements have been adapted to the shape of a church building.
From the outside, the church appears to be a bulwark, but its defensive role is surpassed by the beauty of its gothic elements:
huge arches, massive buttresses and decorative stone and brick aspects.
