Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda in Hungarian, Szeklerburg in German) is the capital of Harghita county - the smalles county seat in Romania.
Located in the Olt river valley (in a swampy area in the Outer Eastern Carpathians), Miercurea Ciuc is the 'coldest city' in Romania, with temperatures so low, during the winter, that it's also called the 'Little Siberia'.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered traces of a 1st century https://www.romaniatourism.com/history.html#ancient Dacian fortification.
Beginning with 1340, a small 'island' - about 1,000 ft. long - located in the middle of the swampy area became the place of a very well organized marketplace. Around the market, the town was formed and grew over the centuries.
Unlike in other regions, where the market was organized on Saturdays, the market in Ciuc area was held every Wednesday and the town was named Miercurea Ciuc [which means that in the Ciuc area the market day was Wednesday (Miercurea in Romanian)].

No matter what one bought or sold at the market, after the deal, both buyer and seller had to toast to make everything go well. The town was thus full of taverns and even the parish had the right to sell liquor. As a result, at the end of the maket day the atmosphere must have been very ‘merry’.
To visitors passionate about nature, culture or “just” about the Seczek food, Miercurea Ciuc deserves at least one day of their vacation; we would recommend at least two.
