First documented:   1558 AD (Csíkszereda)

Miercurea-Ciuc (Csíkszereda in Hungarian or Szeklerburg in German) is a tranquil town, of about 38,000 residents, located along the upper Olt River, in Ciuc depression – eastern Transylvania.
Flanked by the Harghita Mountains to the west and Ciuc Mountains to the east, Miercurea Ciuc is known for the nearby spruce forests, its scenic surroundings and cold winters.
Although it was first documented in 1558, archaeologists confirmed the existence of an Iron-Age settlement and later a Dacian fortress on the territory now occupied by the town of Miercurea Ciuc.
The Szeklers form the large majority of the population of Miercurea Ciuc.

The Szeklers are a distinct ethnic community that live in a compact territory in the eastern Carpathian mountains. Medieval chroniclers associated the Szeklers with the Huns, and agreed that they settled in the Carpathian Basin, in the 5th century, long before the Hungarians (Magyars) invaded the territory. In exchange for defending the eastern boundaries of Transylvania, the Szeklers received the privileged status of a free community. Runes of ancient Turkic origin continue to be used, by the Szeklers, as a written alphabet.

Miercurea Ciuc Sights and Landmarks

Major Miercurea Ciuc landmarks include: Mikó castle (1623), Franciscan Monastery – Sumuleu Ciuc (1773), the roman-catholic church Saint Cross (1785), the City Council (1886 – eclectic), Townhall (1888 – eclectic), Palace of Justice (1890 – eclectic), “Márton Áron” High School (1909 - secession), Municipal Theatre, Petőfi Sándor street.

Miko Castle
Mikó fortress (Cetatea Miko) was commissioned, in 1623, as the residence of Chief Captain Hidvégi Mikó Ferenc (1585–1635), advisor to Prince Gabriel Bethlen. The rectangular (250 ft. x 250 ft.) Renaissance-style structure - designed by Italian architect Giacomo Resti - changed several owners until 1661 when Turkish and Tatar troops invaded the region and burned down the castle.
In 1714, imperial general Count Stephan Steinwille - Transylvania's supreme military leader - decided to rebuild the fortress to better protect the eastern border of Transylvania. Walls were enlarged and strenghtened and four bastions were added.
Today the fortress is the home of Museum of the Sekler Community.

Freedom Square - Miercurea Ciuc
The Freedom Square (Piata Libertatii) is the new centre of town of Miercurea Ciuc, a place where locals meet to socialize and watch people. Visitors gather in the large square to admire the monumental buildings facing it: the Harghita County Council and the Prefecture, the old Hargita Hotel which now houses the Faculty of Economics, Socio-Human and Engineering Sciences, Miercurea Ciuc Cultural Centre, the "Nagy István High School of Fine and Performing Arts.

Another point of attraction in the Freedom Square is the statue of Bishop Márton Áron, blessing a mother and her daughter.
Márton Áron was a well-respected prelate known for his courageous stances, including opposition to deportation of Jews during World War II and resisting communist rule. The bishop considered the six years he spent in prison just a “school of love” which taught him to give affection to each person he met, regardless of their ethnic origin or religion.
